February 19 marks the 20th anniversary of the tragic murder of Armenian lieutenant Gurgen Margaryan.
Having served in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia, Gurgen Margaryan later became an officer in the Ministry of Defense. He participated in NATO's "Partnership for Peace" English language training courses from January 11, 2004.
On February 19, he was brutally killed by Azerbaijani officer Ramil Safarov, who viciously attacked him with an axe while he slept, nearly decapitating him
Gurgen Margaryan is buried in the Yerablur military pantheon in Yerevan.
Safarov's trial in Hungary resulted in a life sentence without the possibility of amnesty for the first 30 years. However, on August 31, 2012, he was extradited to Azerbaijan, where he was promptly pardoned. This decision led to the severance of diplomatic relations between Armenia and Hungary.
In 2017, Hungarian investigative journalists found evidence of a payment of more than $7 million from Azerbaijan into a Hungarian bank account at right around the time that Safarov had been extradited.
Armenia and Hungary have agreed to restore diplomatic relations in December 2022. The foreign ministers of the two countries made the announcement on December 1st after meeting on the sidelines of an OSCE ministerial meeting in Poland.

Kamil Zeynalli, known for his involvement in a he*ious crim* against Armenians, has been detained at Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport after being placed on an international wanted list by Armenia.
The arrest is a direct result of Zeynalli’s actions in occupied Artsakh, where he was filmed b*h*ad*ng a defenseless Armenian elderly man and lo*ting Armenian homes. These cr*mes against human*ty led Armenia to place him on the international wanted list.
In 2021, Zeynalli was controversially awarded a medal by Azerbaijan for his participation in the Artsakh conflict, sparking widespread condemnation. Despite his public persona as a fitness trainer with over 1.5 million Instagram followers, his criminal past has finally caught up with him.
Following his detention, Zeynalli disclosed via an Instagram video that he was placed on the international wanted list by Armenia, voicing concerns about potential extradition to Armenia. A court appearance in Russia is scheduled soon.
Zeynalli’s history is marred by calls for v*olen*e against Armenians, including calls for organized att*cks in Moscow in July 2020 and the promotion of violence against Armenian soldiers, such as b*h*ad*ng*.
His apprehension has led him to seek support from Azerbaijani governmental bodies.
In a disturbing declaration from July 2020, Zeynalli urged Azerbaijanis to attack Armenians in Moscow, inciting violence without fear of repercussions, bolstered by the assertion, “President [Aliyev] is with us,” and further stating, “Even if you are deported, you’ll return as heroes.”
